DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC

Directions In Music is a project launched by Paweł Kaczmarczyk in September 2010, that is a tribute to works of the greatest jazz musicians. The rhythm section is created by the musicians of the Audiofeeling Band, whereas the guests are thematically related to the work of the artist that is presented. Each concert serves not only a meeting with the history of jazz music but also gives a unique opportunity to listen to (live!) the outstanding guests of Paweł Kaczmarczyk.

HORACE SILVER

(1928-2014)

horace-silver

A pianist, composer and bandleader, one of the most popular and influential jazz musicians of the 1950s and ’60s,

After a high-profile apprenticeship with some of the biggest names in jazz, Mr. Silver began leading his own group in the mid-1950s and quickly became a big name himself, celebrated for his clever compositions and his infectious, bluesy playing. At a time when the refined, quiet and, to some, bloodless style known as cool jazz was all the rage, he was hailed as a leader of the back-to-basics movement that came to be called hard bop.

His piano playing, like his compositions, was not that easily characterized. Deftly improvising ingenious figures with his right hand while punching out rumbling bass lines with his left, he managed to evoke boogie-woogie pianists like Meade Lux Lewis and beboppers like Bud Powell simultaneously. Unlike many bebop pianists, however, Mr. Silver emphasized melodic simplicity over harmonic complexity; his improvisations, while sophisticated, were never so intricate as to be inaccessible.

Winner of the 2012 Révélation Jazz Radio-Canada prize, this Canadian trumpeter and composer of Polish origins is turning heads. Versatile and adventurous, he’s a player who likes to shape up his sound with different outfits: with the ODD LOT ensemble, the Montreal musician blends Eastern European music, jazz and electronica, while in the Litania Projekt, he marries neoclassical with Northern European jazz. Known for his lyrical as well as his strong modern approach to trumpet playing, Jacques was born and raised in Montreal and fits well its multi-ethnicity. Always reaching for his polish roots Jacques thrives for new ways of approaching the traditional jazz idiom. Inspired by his various collaborations with companies like Cirque du soleiland various pop and classical artists Jacques breaks out from jazz tradition to create the urge for improvisation inside his ensembles. In symbiosis with the expressive bass player Frédéric Alarie, Jacques finds new ways to use the sound of the trumpet as rarely heard before by presenting a program that swings between modernity and tradition.
